Safety

Every year tens of thousands of lives are lost in transportation related accidents in the U.S. alone.  That number climbs to 1.3 million on a global basis. In addition, between 20-50 million people suffer non-fatal, yet life-changing injuries.   UMTRI’s dedicated faculty and research staff are committed to dramatically reducing fatalities and injuries while improving mobility for all.

Equity

93% percent of the worlds fatalities on the roads occur in low and middle-income countries. In high-income countries like the U.S., people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds are more likely to be involved in crashes. Social inequity in transportation systems has a disproportionate impact on historically underserved communities, rural communities and their residents.
